Besides helping the youth from low-income families with monetary support, our volunteers also communicated with them from time to time. Here are some of the letters.
Emily

Zhang Hanjuan,
Thank you for your letter, I'm Daniel X., a volunteer at the C&L Volunteer Organization. I live in San Jose, California, USA, and I'm also a high school student. I'm glad that the donations raised through our volunteer teaching project can help you! I'm glad to receive your letter, it made me appreciate the impact of our work even more.
I started as a volunteer teacher last summer, tutoring Chinese students in English one-on-one over the internet. It was their donations that have supported you. Through this activity, I've not only been able to help others but have also gained a lot personally. As you mentioned, each of us should contribute to society, and use our talents to help others.
Both of my parents are from China. My father, coming from a rural area in Sichuan, also had to work hard to get an education and eventually moved to the United States. His journey shows that continuous effort can make a difference to one’s future. I hope we can continue to help others, benefit society, improve ourselves and fulfill our wishes.
I wish for success in your studies and for you to enjoy a happy life!
Sincerely,
Daniel X.
Dear
Thank you for your letter! My name is Ellen Hao and my Chinese name is 郝茗. Since our last names are both “郝,” maybe we’re related! I’m happy we were able to help you. We earned the money from teaching English to students in China, and the experience has also helped me practice Chinese and improve my public speaking skills. My Chinese isn’t the best; I want to speak it more to get used to it.
I’m a 10th grader in America, so your experience at school is very relatable. I was nervous before going to high school because I didn’t know if I would be able to make friends, but thankfully I now have many friends with whom I share similar interests! Our final exams are next week, and I’m most worried about Spanish. I think it’s pretty ironic that my worst subject is foreign language when I’m helping other students with their foreign language. I wanted to take Chinese at first because it was easy, but I realized that taking Chinese would be a waste of time since I already speak it.
Unfortunately, your letter didn’t scan properly so I can only see the first page. I hope you do well on your finals if you are taking them, and that you can go to a good college and achieve your dreams!
Sincerely, Ellen H.
Dear Xiaojie,
Thank you for the letter! I am Alex C., a volunteer from Connect and Learning. I’m so glad that you found our organization helpful! Like you, I am a high schooler, born in Canada and grew up in the bay area of the United States. My parents are both from China. I have Chinese blood in my body and I have been learning Chinese everyday since I was a child.
Since last summer, I started to volunteer at Connect and Learning. We focus on teaching Chinese students English as a second language. It is from the students’ donations that we have raised so much money to help everyone to obtain equal educational opportunities. My parents were also born in a very small city and lived a good life through hard work step by step. My mother also received help from others when she was a child. They have all gone through these paths, and I believe you can also get better step by step.
I truly wish you the best of luck!
Alex C.

最后,送你一句英文祝福:I wish you success!
